**These are my father Cliff’s stories about the Great Depression and World War 2. A book in themselves and well worth the read.

The first chapter in this series, From Westhoughton to Waro, is an extract from The Coal Miner’s Son, Cliff’s stories about the Great Depression and World War 2.

I hope you’ll read all his stories, because they describe not just his own experiences, but plenty about the life his Mum and Dad were living in Hikurangi. The chapter featured here is about the Baugh and Corness families back in Lancashire — a window into the world his parents decided to leave.

I probably haven’t been consistent, but by and large I’ve called the women by their “maiden” names — e.g. Dorothy McCarroll, not Dorothy Baugh.
